Basic obedience is so overrated!

For years, dog training has revolved around commands. When in reality we only use commands a handful of times a day, if they even work. To teach a bullet-proof command takes a lot of effort- it’s an exhausting task, especially these days, where time is a luxury.

In my experience, the general dog-loving population is uninformed about socialization, and the real consequences of not being able to coach your dog properly. Socialization avoids future behavioural issues, such as aggression, anxiety, and everything else in between.

Wouldn’t it be best if instead of wasting all your valuable time trying to teach your dog commands that you will barely use, you spend that time learning how to coach your dog perfectly, so you don’t need commands to communicate and to teach exactly what you want?

[Socialization] : Exposure of a young domestic animal (such as kitten or puppy) to a variety of people, animals, and situations to minimize fear and aggression and promote friendliness.

My Australian Shepherd Pepper and I moved from Duesseldorf, Germany to Toronto in April 2016. Pepper was 7 years old then and we had been kind of spiraling down for quite a while. Mostly to do with issues with other dogs; he would freak out at 95% of the dogs he was meeting during a walk. So I avoided walking him more and more during daytime and instead went very early in the morning or late in the evening, mostly driving to a near-by field in order for Pepper to have at least some off-leash walks while trying to avoid meeting other dogs. Oh, and also avoiding people because he didn’t like strangers, or kids, or bikes for that matter. Of course I worked with a few dog trainers back in Germany but nothing ever worked out.
So I started doing some research from Germany in order to find somebody who was willing to walk Pepper in Toronto, preferable in a pack, and to take on this mission impossible. I looked at many websites before I found Yetro via Cuddles and Fetch, the company he was working for at the time. We met shortly after we moved here, Yetro started training Pepper in 1 one 1 sessions, lovely and patient Bo (Yetro’s dog) always being part of it. Yetro gave me instructions too that I was implementing on our walks and Pepper’s behavior started to improve. I was happy, Pepper was happy and a lot more relaxed and I slowly started enjoying our walks again. After a couple of weeks Yetro introduced Pepper to his future pack and boy, Pepper loves it, loves being with Yetro, loves his pack and his off-leash walks, his social skills improved and he is a relaxed and happy dog. He has a great life here in Canada and we really owe it to Yetro, who is the best dog trainer I ever met, always staying in touch, incredibly responsible and he really made Pepper’s life wonderful which makes me very happy. Thank you Yetro!
